Brilliant Corners: House Plants and Your Health

House Plants and Your Health :
Although many of us cannot deny the emotional benefits of filling our house with various breathing green things, we usually do not have the luxury of having a garden in our house. For those who are house-loving, it is sometimes a reality. The great majority of house-owners tend to support plants in their house. Plants provide shade, Trellises, and give the impression of well-being.

House-plants have other benefits aside from just being beautiful ornaments. They can also be healthy investments. The benefits of indoor plants cannot be overlooked. They remove carbon dioxide from the air, reduce the harmful air chemicals, and protect us from the attack of air pollution.

These are some of the health benefits of indoor plants.

o They purify the airThey treat the air with oxygen. The better the air circulation, the more oxygen that can be taken in. The black and white-colored leaves of a flowering plant, if properly cared for, can remove 2 to 3 times as much carbon dioxide from the air compared to the lumpy, dusty conditions of the leaf.

o They circulate oxygen cool the roomsThere is always air conditioning in the typical home, but there is no air circulation during the summer or during a winter. The warm moist air of the summer months allows harmful bacteria to proliferate and the furnishing of the home withplants will prevent one from ever taking it for granted that there is a source of air cooling the room.

o They are soothing and upliftingChanting plants around the home is not a new idea, but it is one that is especially timely and does not require you to tie up a package of chrysanthemums. The simple presence of vegetation in your home gives a noticeable calming and refreshing effect on the mind and soul.

o We protect our homes and our plantsWe do not have to worry much about the Fine Medicare Act, the robinores are protected by it. Additionally, most of the plants we grow are also protected by the Mercury Rule which makes it harder for the government to poison us and kill us.

o We are doing our part in saving the planetEarth is in trouble. It is not so easy to save the planet when you do not have control of how many chemicals you use or when you use them. It is also not so easy for us to know what is really a danger to us and our planet. Things we use every day are hazardous to us in some way or another.

Helpful Tips

Some of the most important things to remember if you use houseplants are…

1. Don’t spray them with insecticides- Many of these chemicals are harmful to the plants, humans and also birds.

2. Don’t keep them in temperatures that exceed 90 degrees- This especially applies to the tropical houseplants. When your plants get too warm they absorb the moisture from the soil and may become dehydrated or even die.

3. Provide enough light- Plants need light to manufacture their own food; if they don’t get enough light, they will be weak and ill.

4. Water them- keep the soil moist, not wet. To test this, stick a thin finger into the soil. If it feels moist, you can wait to water.

5. Air layering- placing several layers of wet newspaper on the soil will provide sufficient air circulation.

6. Grow for your area- the plants will be better suited to the type of soil in your home.

7. Choose slow growing plants.

8. Cut off dead leaves or long stems.

9. Spray before insecticide- to prevent resistance.

10. Never leave children and pets alone with strong winds.
