ABOUT THE PEMBURY HOUSE FARM
Sutton, MA. (near Worcester)
Until a few years ago, this was where the Pembury House Trials (three-day event trials) were held. Velma Emery and her daughter Christine acquired the property in the fall of 2005 after selling Butters Farm of Wilmington, MA. They began cross fencing the pastures with white 3 rail PVC fence, adding run-in sheds, a stallion barn, completely renovating the stalls in the main barn, and updating the lovely antique colonial ‘big house’.
Butters Farm was formerly recognized as one of the most active and successful Appaloosa breeding and showing operations in New England. The best-known Appaloosa stallions owned and promoted by Butters Farm were Double Or Nothing and Justin Marshall. Several World and National Champions and many Regional Champions were produced on the family farm in Wilmington, MA.
"Velma and Lilly"
Velma Emery, whose husband Paul passed away in l989, became involved with Thoroughbred racehorses in the 80’s and is still an active breeder of Thoroughbreds as well as a licensed racetrack trainer. Primarily the Thoroughbred activities revolved around breeding Thoroughbreds to race and such well-known stallions as Rise Jim and Soldier Boy stood at stud in their later years at Butters Farm.
Velma also opened Horse Haven Bed & Breakfast Inn of Salisbury, NH in 1997 and operated it until it was sold in February of 2006. She then joined her daughter, Christine, at the Pembury House Farm of Sutton, MA.
Bringing to Pembury House Farm a small herd of broodmares and the well-known and respected Thoroughbred stallion, Real Partner, an own son of In Reality, Real Partner is recognized as an excellent race sire as well as a sire of talented sport horses with outstanding movement and good minds.
Shifting part of the breeding emphasis from breeding racing prospects to Sport Horses, Velma is breeding several thoroughbred mares to Paints or “Dressage” Pintos.
Generally there will always be several horses for sale; most will be thoroughbreds or cross-breds.
